The Institute of Science and Technology Austria (IST Austria) is looking for highly qualified candidates to apply for our ISTScholar PhD program. We offer fully-funded PhD positions in the natural and mathematical sciences in a world-class research environment on the outskirts of Vienna.

Our PhD program is characterized by innovative training with a special focus on interdisciplinarity, close mentoring by outstanding faculty within small research groups, and access to first-rate facilities. Students spend the first year completing coursework and rotations before choosing a thesis group and passing the qualifying exam. Our PhD graduates have gone on to top positions in academia and industry all over the world.

Students with a bachelor’s or master’s degree in biology, neuroscience, mathematics, computer science, physics, and related areas are encouraged to apply. We offer internationally competitive salaries co-funded by an EU Marie Curie-Sklodowska grant, full health benefits, and subsidized on-campus housing in the first year.

We offer a US-style graduate school experience, in which students are admitted to the PhD program, rather than individual research groups, and only select their PhD supervisors after a year of rotations and a unique interdisciplinary training program. IST Austria has a diverse and international student population, represented by students from over 30 countries. We use English throughout the institute as the language of instruction and communication.

The Institute is only a 25-minute bus ride from Vienna, which is consistently voted one of the best cities in the world to live in. Our students have the choice of living in Klosterneuburg, a quiet area surrounded by beautiful woods, or right in the hustle and bustle of Vienna. We also have a number of housing options on campus.
