Merit Scholarship
The University of Amsterdam seeks to draw the best students in the world to include in its international classes. The outstanding students from outside the European Union can register for their Amsterdam Merit Scholarship.
The University of Amsterdam designed the scholarships to provide promising and hard-working non-EU/EEA students with the opportunity to obtain a degree in one of the fields of study protected by the UvA. The scheme is highly selective: only candidates with outstanding performance and encouragement will earn a scholarship.
The University of Amsterdam
The University of Amsterdam is the largest college in the Netherlands, offering a wide variety of academic programmes. At the university, 30,000 students, 6,000 members of staff and 3,000 PhD candidates research and work in a variety of fields, linked to a culture of curiosity. The goal of the university is to provide a place where everyone feels accepted, represented and understood.
Eligibility Criteria
The applicant must have to meet up with the following eligibility criteria:
- The candidate must be an international student.
- The applicant must have a non-EU/EEA passport and not eligible for assistance under the Dutch Research Grants and Loans Scheme and a low school fee. The scholarships office should be informed as soon as possible of any change in citizenship, a form of residence permit and possible ‘Studiefinanciering’ help during the academic year.
- The candidate must be fully admitted to the degree programme of the Graduate School of Social Sciences. A continuation of a scholarship is not assured when a candidate changes his or her degree programme.
- The nominee must be accepted unconditionally to the Master’s programme of the Graduate School of Social Sciences, which is the first programme for the applicant, either at bachelor level or at master level, in the Netherlands.
- The applicant must be accepted at the UvA as a full-time student for the academic year and the programme for which the award is granted.
- The applicant should not earn a full coverage scholarship for the same duration of study as the AMS scholarship. Notify the Stipendium Office when another full scholarship has been awarded and accepted.
- The continuation of the scholarship for the following research year(s) depends on the satisfactory success of the study. The programme you will be participating in, depending on the department’s curriculum and rules and regulations, sets the standard for adequate progress and the time and manner in which progress will be assessed. Please be aware that you are expected to earn approximately 80% of your credits in any one year.
