The Cyprus Institute (CyI) is accepting applications for its Energy, Environment and Atmospheric Sciences PhD program. Successful candidates will be given the opportunity to study at The Cyprus Institute, applying their research towards the activities of the EU H2020 CySTEM project.
The Energy, Environment and Atmospheric Sciences PhD program educate potential scholars in subjects that are of international high priority. The challenging program curricula include courses that establish a common basis among students from different disciplines. The curriculum tracks courses depending on the selected domain (energy, environment, or atmosphere) as well as including a number of courses that provide insights into a variety of more specialized and vital topics.
Successful candidates will receive financial support for up to three years which is the minimum duration of the PhD studies at the CyI. The financial support is in the form of a stipend of 14,000 euro per annum for living expenses. The support is associated with the student contributing through his\her Thesis research or as a part-time Research Assistant to the goals of the European Research Area (ERA) Chair in Solar Thermal Technologies for the Eastern Mediterranean (CySTEM). As stated in by the European Commission on its website, “the ERA Chairs is an important part of the EU’s effort to unlock Europe’s potential in research and innovation.”

The CySTEM ERA Chair action has the goal of enhancing the already significant international standing of the Solar and Desalination Group of the Cyprus Institute to consolidate it into a leader in the Concentrated Solar Thermal (CST) research field. The group’s main research efforts are targeted to developing innovative small poly-generation CST system concepts, which have been initially established in collaboration with leading research institutions of USA and Europe, such as MIT and the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign, under the leadership of Cyprus Institute’s President, Prof. C.N. Papanicolas. We are particularly interested in students with high mathematical and computational skills, interested in the modelling and design of new types of concentrating solar thermal energy systems (knowledge of C++ is an advantage).
The holder of CySTEM ERA Chair is Prof. Manuel J. Blanco, who is currently also the Chair of SolarPACES, the International Energy Agency’s Technology Collaboration Program for CST related technologies.
